Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)
An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a test that checks for the electrical activity of your heart. An EKG shows the heart’s electrical activity as line tracings on paper. It allows for the detection of heart rhythm abnormalities. It can be done on children of any age and is completely painless.
ECHOCARDIOGRAM
An echocardiogram (also called an echo) is a type of ultrasound test that uses high-pitched sound waves that are sent through a device called a transducer. The device picks up echoes of the sound waves as they bounce off the different parts of your heart. This test helps to detect abnormalities of heart structure, valves, blood flow, heart function and in some situations (prenatal echo) abnormalities of the cardiac rhythm. This test is performed in the office, completely painless and results will be immediately communicated to the family.
FETAL ECHOCARDIOGRAM
Fetal echocardiography is a test similar to an ultrasound performed in the obstetrician or maternal fetal medicine office. This exam allows the fetal cardiologist to better see the structure, function, and heart rhythm of your unborn child’s heart. It’s typically done in the second trimester, between weeks 18 to 24. The fetal echocardiogram also helps in the management of multiple gestation pregnancies. The exam uses sound waves that “echo” off of the structures of the fetus’ heart. Results of the test will be discussed with family immediately following the examination.
Holter Monitor
A Holter monitor is a battery-operated portable device that measures and records your heart’s activity (ECG) continuously for 24 to 48 hours. The device is the size of a cell phone. It has wires with electrodes that attach to your skin. Holter monitor helps in detection of asymptomatic and symptomatic arrhythmia at a wide variety of rates for a short duration (typically 1 to 2 days). This test is completely painless.
MOBILE CARDIAC TELEMETRY (EVENT RECORDER)
A cardiac event recorder is a battery-powered portable device that records your heart’s electrical activity (ECG) when you have symptoms. Event recorder helps in detection of asymptomatic and symptomatic arrhythmia at a wide variety of rates and durations. Our advanced monitors (Mobile Cardiac Telemetry) are capable of real time detection, record and wirelessly transmit asymptomatic and symptomatic arrhythmia to clinicians for analysis. Patients may also record manual events with symptom and activity reporting. If necessary monitor will be given during office visit data will be continuously monitored while the patient is wearing the monitor and once a device is returned a final report will be communicated to the patient/family. This test is completely painless.
Exercise Stress Testing
Exercise stress test we perform is a treadmill test, which helps the doctor to find out how well your heart handles work. In children with heart disease, this test is performed in a controlled condition to determine their exercise tolerance. In healthy children, this test may be performed to make sure your child is not at any high risk for sudden cardiac death during athletics. This test is performed in our office and results will be communicated upon completion of the test.
AMBULATORY BLOOD PRESSURE MONITOR
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) measures blood pressure at regular intervals while your child is having regular activity either at home or school. This test is able to reduce the white coat hypertension effect in which blood pressure is elevated during the examination process due to nervousness and anxiety caused by being in a clinical setting. This test is considered as the most accurate non-invasive method of assessing children with high blood pressure to determine if it is truly hypertension, which will need medical treatment.
